1922 plot
An account of the defeat of the Greek army in Asia Minor in 1922, which almost resulted in the extermination of the Greeks at the hands of the Turks. The film recounts, through the personal tragedies of three characters, the 'Asia Minor Disaster' and the heartbreaking trials of the Greeks in Asia Minor, who were arrested and sent to their deaths by Kemal Atatürk's troops and armed groups of Muslims. A merchant's wife, a teacher and a 17-year-old boy try to survive as they follow a column of prisoners through Asia Minor. The teacher is murdered by a Turk, the merchant's wife loses her mind, and only the boy will manage to survive. Based on the book by Ilias Venezis "The Number 31328".

The Greek genocide is little known outside Greece. Perhaps because the more extensive Armenian genocide took place at the same time. The ethnic cleansing perpetrated by the Turks was no less severe. The massacres and expulsions of Christian Armenians, Assyrians, and Greeks reached a climax in 1922 with the formation of the homogeneous Turkish nation-state.
Filmed poetically without much dialogue or a distracting subplot. A cinematic tour de force by director Nikos Koundouros.
