Art.

Clever in the use of impressionistic landscape images, dreamy music, long, slow and dreamy shots of the old painter and his young model. It's also great to show the paintings there, to show the difference between what the model looks like and what the painter actually puts on his canvas. The dialogues that are woven through it are also clever, the perfect intonation of the old cracking voice that gives the instructions to the somewhat defiantly playful girl.

In contrast to, for example, La Belle Noiseuse (1991) - with which there are quite a few parallels - this film has a rather clear story in which the old painter is placed in a frame, a piece of history that needs to be told. This makes the film a lot more accessible, making it possible without having to lose your singularity and monomaniacalness in the painter's world. But perhaps that is also the weakness of the film - because the artist remains on the plane of tension between painter and family father, the film does not really choose and the viewer therefore remains somewhat free in his or her judgment. For film or art lovers, a more one-sided approach might have been more interesting. Now the film remains somewhat in the ordinary atmosphere, alternatively it might even have created a real work of art. The ingredients are there.

Just as well, a very good film. Strongly played, great soundtrack, overwhelming images.

As befits a film about an artist, a collection of picturesque images, especially when Christa Théret poses. I didn't think the story about her relationship with Pierre-Auguste Renoir and his son Jean, the later film director, was great. However, the sometimes magical cinematography makes up for a lot.

Renoir is a semi-biographical film about the last years of the life of the world-famous painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir. In addition, the film mainly focuses on the blossoming love between the model Andrée and Renoir's son Jean. Both characters are convincingly portrayed here by the young actors Christa Théret and Vincent Rottiers. Michel Bouquet is also excellent as the old, somewhat grumpy Auguste Renoir.

Visually, the film is one to frame. Director Gilles Bourdos has looked closely at Renoir's work and has tried to bring a kind of lifelike painting to the silver screen with this biopic. The use of color is beautiful.

Unfortunately, the film is a bit on the long side and does not manage to maintain continuous attention. The pace is too slow for that. But the beautiful images make up for a lot and the dreamy music by Alexandre Desplat is also very atmospheric.
