Moderate horror.

Creature flicks haven't really been in for a while. This is also because horror currently takes place in the low-budget corner, so that you can almost taste the rubber in the timid attempts that are still being made these days.

Although it must be said, the CG in this film isn't always the best either. The sample is meager. In the beginning still skilfully hidden (thought the film was a bit too dark), but as it becomes more visible it soon becomes apparent that the monster design is not very good.

Some nasty actors and ditto characters in this movie. Sizemore is a professional jellyfish, Miller also does not succeed in putting down a nice character. Doesn't really help with the tension, although I'm afraid Hyams wouldn't have gotten that far anyway, even with good actors.

It's still entertaining, doesn't last too long (although it could have been a little shorter) and contains a few nice horror scenes, but I expected it to be a bit more fun.

2.0*

Severely underrated creature feature. Reminds me a bit of Mimic (not coincidentally also from 1997). Both offer a mix of dry, scientific bullshit and rather cheesy monster action. Also remarkably 'edgy' in terms of gore, for a late 90's B-movie. They were often somewhat limited and much more conservative than in the decades before. Unexpectedly fun pulp with a solid mix between practical effects and CGI.

After the huge success of Jurassic Park, Hollywood cared more about monster movies. more money was put into it and big names were attracted. None other than Stan Winston was brought in to create the monster for The Relic. Directed by the experienced Peter Hyams, he has a great

underrated horror pulp made with fun characters with enough background stories, something you don't see much in today's monster/horror movies. Especially Tom Sizmore who plays the superstitious D'agosta steals the show for me, but also the beautiful Penelapi Ann Miller as doctor Margo Green is an enrichment.

The tension is carefully built up and the monster shows itself at the right time. The gore is to feast, they let themselves go. A must for the horror and 90's enthusiast!
