Verloren Maandag plot

Tomasz, a Polish refugee, is looking for Lenka, a young woman who at the time helped him guide his mother through the Iron Curtain; but this is not so easy. He roams Antwerp in the company of alcoholics, vagabonds and other outcasts. He also gets to know the world of immigrants. He has a short-lived relationship with Linda, a woman marked by fate. During his stay in the city, Tomasz is taken in tow by some petty criminals who help him survive.

Ha, how I would love to arrive as a Pole in the Antwerp Statiekwartier of the 70s, be welcomed by the lost souls of the Statiestraat, still present there today, and then lose myself in an almost comatose alcohol haze, often fueled by a quirky mix of gin and white wine. I didn't know that combo yet; in the Wacamba Bar on 8th Avenue I usually limit myself to a Budweiser and a shot of Jameson. We bump into a young Jan Decleir, in an early role. A former colonial who you could easily take a knife to. There is something absurdist about the quest of the main character, who makes absolutely no attempt to find his beloved Lena, with the exception of occasionally chasing a bus through a chaotic intersection while completely drunk or stabbing a random pimp. His search is indeed obsessive and maniacal. Do women really exist or are they just imagined projections of male rage? The early 70s are palpable in this forgotten Flemish work, there is an atmosphere of total hopelessness and no future. Merciless guitar violence on the soundtrack. I detected a similar vibe in 'Les Tueurs Fous', also recently rediscovered. I'm slowly starting to think that we've landed in such an era again. Bloody hell!
