Wondrous creatures.

From the makers of the masterful Microcosmos comes another little gem. Slightly less impressive than the aforementioned magnum opus of the directing duo, but still enchantingly beautifully shot. Once again, the small animals steal the show, even now that a story with human actors has been woven around it. The two children who play the lead roles are not bad, but sometimes feel superfluous in this semi-documentary.

That's because the story, about a friendship between two children who both admire nature, seems to serve primarily as a framework for the stunning images of the fantastic flora and fauna. These images are fabulous enough in themselves. Nevertheless, "A World Full of Enchantment," as released on BD and DVD in the Netherlands, is absolutely worth seeing. If only for those intriguing insects and other wondrous creatures.

Good.

Right from the start, the film throws you off-guard. It seems like a film about a little boy who has to spend his holiday in the countryside with his family, discovering the animals in nature. But then, it ultimately becomes primarily a nature film. Suddenly, a girl in a red dress appears, and together they have to form a kind of framework to connect the nature scenes. And that story is rather thin. It doesn't build very well. But if you then let go of the idea that the film needs a story and a structure, you're left with a wealth of very beautiful, often atmospheric, and colorful nature scenes. A dreamy nature film with beautiful atmospheric images, but where you learn nothing, or at least very little, about the animals and plants so beautifully depicted. Well...
