Silent City plot

"Passion doesn't need a language"

Rosa, a young western woman succeeds in doing an internship with a world-famous master chef who runs an acclaimed seafood restaurant in Tokyo. Of course she hopes to master the master's "secrets". However, she is not placed in the cooking kitchen itself, but in a room where the fish is cleaned and where it is completely thrown back on itself. For weeks she silently cuts dead fish from their bones, for as long as she masters neither the language nor the mind of her master, she can only imitate him. When she decides to earn some extra money in the evenings, the lack of communication, the insecure position in the kitchen and the internal conversations start to play tricks on her.

Not really a high-quality drama, visually it looked nice but all in all it was quite a boring affair. The film is certainly not really bad because I kept watching it with fascination (maybe also because I have a pond with a lot of fish). Laurence Roothooft played quite well and she also looked not bad. To speak in terms of "stinissen" she was degreeless because she did not have much to offer.

The film is reminiscent of Stupeur et Tremblements (Film, 2003) which also focuses on the hard, distant relationship between Japanese and Westerners (in business). Especially the book of the same name by Amélie Nothomb is not unknown in the literary world.

It almost sounds like a myth when you look at such films from a Western perspective, because there are at least as many films that claim the opposite. However, the Japanese have always been somewhat more reserved and distant, but this is going too far. This culture of gossip and backbiting is certainly not new. The Japanese simply love traditions and defined rules and customs. Woe betide you if you do not adhere to them. So it is also expected that you know the rules, even though no one explains them to you.

You discover true panic in the main character when she is left alone and gets lost in the crowded metro and no one seems to care about her. I liked the introduction of Japanese culture with those baths or with the many workshops of the fish company. It is also nice that the Japanese is not translated. As a viewer you know as much as the main character. Nothing ...

Not great, but interesting! And, it's boneless, not degreeless
