I saw the film on TV years ago, sometime in the 70's so I don't remember much of it, but recently recorded the film from the BBC. I'm a bit in two minds about this film, on the one hand the telling of the story is central to the film, the boat trip to the Indians and the mutual competition with other trading companies. On the other hand, these facts get in the way of the action that actually belongs to a western, the boat trip is beautifully depicted, but also takes a very long time. Another disadvantage is that the film was shot in black and white and looks very much like a western from the 1930s. The film was shot in 1952 in the Teton National Park, so beautiful pictures could have been shot there that would certainly enhance the film. had taken it to a higher viewing level. The subplot with the Indian girl is not fully developed, but the advantage is that Elizabeth Threat does not portray an Indian as was customary in those days, submissive and subservient. She portrayed a fierce, cynical and resilient woman. It's a shame that she never appeared in a film again after this one role.

The acting is fine, Douglas and Hunnicut give good roles, but you can expect more from a film by Hawks, the director also of Rio Bravo and Red River. Was it perhaps the lack of Wayne in this film that made it all a bit tepid?

Tiomkin's music is of a high level, this and the role of Threat and the fact that I happen to be fond of westerns mean that I give it a 2.5, but I am slightly disappointed with this film.

A fairly rare film that I only found after about three weeks of searching in a remote corner of the internet. The copy was visibly (and audibly) damaged, but there was no other option. I don't get warm or cold from these types of western/adventure films set in the 'American Frontier' era, especially when things are so heavily romanticized. The Big Sky feels like an ancient legend unfolding at a slow pace. A group of trappers and merchants sail two thousand miles to an Indian tribe to trade there. Along the way they encounter all kinds of obstacles, sometimes resulting in death. The French crew is quite charming, the structure and progression of the story are okay, the camera work and photography in general never surprises and even the usually great Kirk Douglas is virtually invisible. Possibly Technicolor could create a little more enthusiasm, but at the moment I felt nothing but indifference. There wasn't a single character to cling to and I never felt like anything was really at stake.

In Howard Hawks's The Big Sky, Kirk Douglas plays a somewhat meek hero who quite thoughtfully and empathetically represents the animated atmosphere in this film together with his emotionally explosive friend Boone Caudill (Dewey Martin). Together they board a boat that sails up the Missouri River to buy pelts from the Blackfoot Indians without interference from middlemen, thereby shaking the monopoly on that trade, which is of course in the hands of a nefarious man. Along the way, people ogle the only woman on board, friendships are made and adventures are experienced.

The Big Sky is a cheerful western that focuses on the mutual relationships of the characters. Beautifully staged and without much tension, the story glides past the eye. With pleasant but not particularly intriguing characters, a few unremarkable shootings and a stereotypical image of the Indians, the film is a pleasant one, but it is not a film that will linger in the memory for long.
