En Fiende att Dö För plot

It is 1912 when the well-known German scientist Alfred Wegener discovers that all the continents on Earth were once connected. He named this massive supercontinent "Pangea". Despite the threat of war in the autumn of 1939, the Germans decide to go on an expedition in search of evidence for Wegener's theory. Their journey to the Arctic island, Svalbard, is led by German geologist Friedrich and his beautiful assistant Leni. Three other renowned scientists, two Englishmen and the Swede Gustav, join the pair, as do the Norwegian captain and Russian crew. While the geologists are excited about their research mission, growing political tensions between their countries are soon affecting their work. The journey gets complicated when, on the eve of Hitler's invasion of Poland, Gustav and Leni seem to fall in love. With Britain and France declaring war on Germany, the scientists now find themselves pawns in a struggle for global power.

Een erg fijn gespeelde en gefilmde rolprent. Jammer dat het verhaal net wat te ver uit de bocht schiet, met wat meer beheersing had er misschien wel een veel interessantere vertelling van gemaakt kunnen worden. Hoewel we dan ook waarschijnlijk weer een paar erg fraaie beelden aan het eind hadden moeten missen. De beelden van het ijskoude landschap zijn op zich al reden genoeg om de film met plezier uit te zitten, en het schip is ook erg mooi met de fraai betimmerde kajuiten en de mooie brug. Doe mij zo'n scheepje en je ziet me hier nooit meer terug, zeg maar. Behalve dat vond ik ook de hoofdrollen van Ulfsäter en Hain leuk gedaan. Voor mij geen bekende namen, maar daar moet je je ook niet altijd door laten leiden, dat blijkt wel weer.

A very nicely acted and filmed movie. Too bad the story just goes a bit too far off the rails, with a bit more control it could have been made into a much more interesting story. Although we probably would have missed a few very beautiful images at the end.

The images of the icy landscape are reason enough to sit through the film with pleasure, and the ship is also very beautiful with the beautifully paneled cabins and the beautiful bridge. Give me a ship like that and you will never see me here again, so to speak.

Besides that I also liked the leading roles of Ulfsäter and Hain. No familiar names for me, but you shouldn't always let yourself be led by that, that's clear.
