Better than expected.

Analogous to the footballers, you would expect Hooper to have gone to the Middle East mainly for the big money, not so much for quality. Now this is not a real high-quality horror film of course, but certainly not that bad either.

It's nice that he's at least going on location, the Djinn in America (that's what it seemed like in the beginning) would have been annoying. Also nice to see a slightly different creature, even if it's not really special. Also a bit overpowered (invisible, shapeshifter and possessor), what is nice is that the thing just wins in the end. Everything went according to plan, the human is the loser.

Acting is a bit on the edge, especially in the beginning. Once on location it is better. The location itself is fortunately cool. Lonely tower, in the middle of the desert, always shrouded in mist. The horror/haunting effects are also decent, although it never really wants to get exciting.

It doesn't last too long, it builds up patiently and, especially halfway through, it manages to create a more than decent atmosphere.

3.0*

via John Milton discovered at the horror challenge and the film is from UAE So two birds with one stone. So also good for that other challenge of traveling around the world. Well, I more or less agree with Milton because it's not that bad, but good is something else. The locations and the atmosphere around the Djinn are quite nice, although the execution is variable. The Djinn is revealed too early, which means the tension is already on a low burner. But it's mainly the jump scares that don't work at all. The story is indeed a bit chaotic towards the end, although the ending does manage to surprise. 5/10

Director Tobe Hooper proves that his level can plummet if he does not manage to get the necessary budget, because Djinn is at times of a very sad level. A content that is almost impossible to follow, together with forced and bad acting, both put the negative footnote for what is to come early. Hooper chooses his locations cleverly, but nevertheless does not manage to evoke any form of tension or threat. Towards the end it all goes completely wild in terms of spookiness, but by then most horror fans will probably have already dropped out because of a missing red line.
