Déborah François convincingly gives herself completely in this television film about student prostitution. It is said that in France alone, tens of thousands of students are involved in the prostitution circuit to pay for their studies (and other things).
Because the sex scenes are never explicitly shown, the focus remains on the story, which is based on an anonymous book (written by a certain Laura D.) about her own experiences, unlike in a porn film. That story is interesting enough, although you can question the choices Laura (Déborah François) makes in her part-time job as a prostitute (the famous donkey and the stone). You can expect more from a student who gets such high marks.
It's significant that the last question of the TV interview is only answered with a smile.

I do remember the fuss that the book on which this film is based caused at the time - and that while I didn't go to France nearly as often as I do now. But that fuss and social indignation didn't even come close to this film - what an unprecedentedly strong indictment of society it is, this story about the somewhat naive and clumsy Laura who, surrounded by a rare collection of louts, tries to keep herself going.

Déborah François plays that with unprecedented dedication and with her entire physique. Yet rarely seen someone who radiates in every fiber of her body that what is happening is really, really not okay - as a kind of information film of the 'no is no' campaign you could hardly find anything more convincing. Also in that respect, you are a rare lout if you still go and abuse. Because that is so obvious, nobody can bring a single argument against that.

One of the most depressing films I have ever seen. On the other hand, it is also very well made, but don't expect to have a nice evening with it. What strikes me even more is that the beautiful François looks quite a lot like two young French women I saw growing up. I can't imagine them ever ending up in such a situation.
