Django Reinhardt, Trois Doigts de Génie plot
Despite his left hand mutilated and disfigured by a fire, the Belgian Django Reinhardt (1910-1953) became one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all time. The charismatic gypsy turned his handicap into an opportunity. He discovered jazz through Louis Armstrong, and created his own style, later called gypsy jazz. Together with violinist Stephane Grappelli, he founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France, which made him wildly popular throughout Europe. An American adventure in 1946 came to nothing, after which Django returned to Europe. He continued to experiment, including with the electric guitar and the bebop style of music.
