There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane plot

In July 2008, as startled motorists try to avoid 36-year-old Diane Schuler, she already drove nearly two miles in the wrong direction on the highway in New York's Hudson Valley. The incident resulted in eight deaths, including her own. The inquest found that she consumed large amounts of alcohol and marijuana while driving with five children in her minivan, four of whom died - one of whom was her 2-year-old daughter. However, the exact cause of the accident could not be determined. Her husband and sister-in-law try to answer their many questions about that fateful day, with the help of a private detective.

Failed. Such a title raises a question that is not answered with alcohol and THC alone. You can taste in everything that Garbus, like the Schulers, is making desperate attempts to clear Diane's name, to bring something to light, something that is not right, something that explains what possessed her on that fateful day, but it is not in it. What also does not help is that several relatives refused to cooperate. This creates a somewhat one-sided picture in a documentary that tells something about Diane and reconstructs the terrible accident, but that is about it. Something for disaster tourists perhaps.

On July 16, 2009, 36-year-old Diane Schuler drove a minivan with her son, daughter, and three nieces for nearly two miles on the wrong side of traffic before colliding head-on with an oncoming vehicle with three occupants. Only 5-year-old Brian survived. The autopsy revealed that Diane had been drinking heavily and smoking marijuana. Six months later, her husband Daniel and sister-in-law Jay still maintain that this was completely unthinkable, and have been the target of hate mail and threats for it. They asked Liz Garbus to follow their investigation into “the true story.” The fact that the parents of the three nieces who died would not cooperate speaks volumes. Why won’t Daniel and Jay accept the autopsy results? What possessed Diane to get behind the wheel in that condition? What was going through the minds of the children during that death row? And where is the private investigator who was supposed to investigate further on Daniel and Jay’s behalf? None of these answers are satisfactorily answered in this meandering, exploitative HBO documentary.
