Since I had already seen both 'The Shop around the Corner' from 1940 and 'You've Got Mail' from 1998, there was little 'new' left. They took a lot of things from The Shop (which makes sense because this was the musical remake of it), while YGM in turn literally took all sorts of things from 'In the Good Old Summertime'.

Still nice entertainment. And also nice to see that Buster Keaton was (again) appreciated and he was not (again) saddled with some pathetic supporting role.

The sparkling dialogues of "The Shop around the Corner" are replaced here by musical acts in which Judy Garland is certainly to be appreciated.

The theme of confusion of identity and the misunderstandings that result from it is not new, so even in this "In the good old Summertime" surprises are far away.

In fact, in both cases the plot is thin and purely aimed at relaxing entertainment and as such quite successful.

In the film, only "Meet me Tonight in Dreamland" is a popular song and is sung neatly by Judy.

I certainly enjoyed this romantic story, the opening scene in which the two meet each other outside on the street is quite hilarious, and when Garland is offered the job there are a few nice moments between the two, after that the bickering dies down a bit, although the restaurant scene is also very entertaining.

the sets are also very beautiful and especially the shop is a beautiful nostalgic location.

The chemistry between Garland and Johnson is very good, it's been a while since I saw The Shop Around the Corner but I certainly don't think this musical version is the lesser of the two (I might watch the original again).

Final conclusion: a great film to watch at Christmas.
