Greece, the 1940s. In a mountainous village in the Greek countryside, armed paramilitary units led by Captain Michas terrorize leftist partisans who refuse to abide by the Treaty of Varkiza, which was supposed to end the Greek civil war. Among them are Lambros and his wife who are brought together by circumstances.
