Based on the life of black human rights activist Medgar Evers (Howard E. Rollins Jr.), who was murdered in '63. The film follows Medgar Evers and his wife Myrlie Evers (Irene Cara) from the moment they become active in the NAACP, a movement committed to the equal treatment of people of color. The couple's actions against racial segregation in schools and in public life provoked a great deal of aggression among the white population of Mississippi, ultimately resulting in Evers's death.
