Corpo Celeste plot

13-year-old Marta is struggling to resettle in Italy after moving from Switzerland, where she grew up for a decade. Restless and with clear eyes, she observes the sights, sounds and smells of the city, but she continues to feel like an outsider. The handheld camera and the Italian printing at the beginning of the film left a somewhat chaotic impression, but once the film focuses on faith, with the thorough preparations for catechesis, and on the person of Marta (particularly convincing performance by Yle Vianello). The film will really fascinate and there will certainly be something beautiful to experience. Remarkably well performed are the scenes where for example Santa, who is convinced of her faith and will do nothing to teach it to the young, gets the disappointment of her life when a priest considers her non-existent for the Church or when the village priest creates lists of people he has recruited to vote for his candidate in the elections, and certainly, throughout the entire length of the film, when Marta observes and finds so many incongruities in the society governed by the Church.

Flashback Corpo Celeste & Le Meraviglie

''Through the eyes of her protagonist, Rohrwacher examines the differences between compassion and 'heavenly justice', between emotional authenticity and disguised lust for power. The search for identity here is always a search for the meaning of time and place, for ideas about people and the world and their abrasive dimensions."

From the perspective of 13-year-old Marta, the film tells about an episode in her life in which, after growing up in Switzerland, she ends up in the confusing and alienating environment of Calabria in southern Italy. Not a nice environment. Dilapidated houses, a half-finished highway and a dried up riverbed determine the cityscape. In this city Marta must undergo the sacrament of Confirmation after the neat Switzerland. She observes her new environment critically and distantly and considers the Catholic rituals.

The film is fragmentary in design. Events that take place in Marta's life take place in rapid succession. They very accurately reflect her desperation in her search for certainties. In addition to a new temperamental environment with religious and social changes, the closed girl has to contend with individual reforms of an adolescent nature. Corpo Celeste by director Alice Rohrwacher is a real Coming of Age.

The film has no introduction but drops the viewer into the hustle and bustle of a religious ritual. A kind of pilgrimage. Like Marta, the viewer must try to make sense of all kinds of chaotic scenes full of unknown characters. This storytelling method brings Marta's world closer and arouses curiosity. It helps enormously that Yle Vianello, who sensitively shapes the character of Marta, makes her very believable. The fact that the story is captured in powerful images full of symbolism and the film has an eye for absurdity and does not shy away from humor also helps enormously.
