"The Fall of the Last Empire"

Another brave attempt to film a piece of history and again they make the same mistake, at least if this film was intended for the Western market. It has all been portrayed too exaggeratedly, as befits dictatorial regimes, a lot of flag display, noble heroes who willingly die for the good cause or impose moral dilemmas on themselves time and time again, and of course very bad villains, who are not bothered by any of that , radiate selfishness and are too stupid and arrogant to dance for the devil.
That might work in the orient, here it only works in a comedic brawl movie, not in a movie where you try to tell a serious piece of the country's history.
Partly because that history is not so well known here, the many characters in the film seem confusing, which is caused by the fact that the time is not taken to introduce the characters, and in some scenes I had to think who is that again.
The role of Chan is important, but this time too that role becomes a caricature, that is probably not Chan's fault, but he is simply not given the opportunity to put drama in his role, other than watching emotionally during the fighting .
The action is well portrayed, the costumes and sets also look authentic, which is a plus for the film, but this is not a film that I will watch again soon.

The problem for Europeans will be that the details that are not too interesting for us are dealt with in a rather specialized way. As a result, the interest sometimes dropped far away and you actually do not get full involvement in the often intense events. The subject may also lend itself better to a more extensive TV series, because although the story occasionally stalls, you also have the feeling that some things are unraveled too quickly. A bit unbalanced, certainly not perfect, but still interesting enough to see once. With better directors than these two, the end result would undoubtedly have been even better, because the often used volatility does not testify to top class in the directing choices. Watched mainly because Jackie Chan is present in an unusually serious role for him. In any case, the action hero does better as an actor than as a director, although he gets considerably less screentime here than you would expect based on the announcement and his reputation.

And it won't be long before we're surrounded by incited crowds and flying bullets. Without any doubt it is very beautifully filmed, the locations and landscapes are of course phenomenal, and the traditions and costumes are a feast for the eyes. Then I almost forget that the war and the violence looks strong and convincing. That is going in the right direction you would say, but unfortunately the opposite is true...
Because the attempt to provide the film with depth, charge and explanation in terms of all parties involved actually fails completely. At times it is long-winded, distant and there are extremely boring dialogues. And that is where the film suffers the most with moments where you are almost skillfully lulled to sleep to leave the starting block with the war like a runner. In that sense it is running or standing still and the contrast is too great. In addition, some people act quite badly.
No, unfortunately this is not what it could have been and mainly gets bogged down in a film where the balance is rather lost. But yes, did we expect otherwise from a film where Jackie Chan himself is at the helm and Zhang Li excels mainly because of the cinematography but not so much as a director...?
