"Truth? There is no such thing."

One autumn evening in 1978, Edward Srodon is staying at the farm of the Dziabas family in the Bieszczady Mountains. Initially mistrust between guest and host quickly turns into friendship. After 'Seksmisja' the second film I see from Poland. This time no SF, but a nicely elaborated reflection on Polish society between '78 and '82 (and the years after).

Dom Zly consists of two storylines that crisscross each other. One is set in the fall of 1978. Srodon and Mr. Dziabas drink quite a bit of vodka together and after a while - intoxicated - make a 'genius' deal. In the winter of 1982, the farm takes center stage again, this time to solve a murder case.

In addition to the hopeless misery, the joys of life are also shown, often introduced by a good shot of vodka. As a result, the film flourishes after the boring beginning. Interesting events and fun drunken thoughts follow. Enough entertaining material in 1982, at least, we laugh about it. A mirror dangling from a police car, another car with a smashed windshield - nice in temperatures of -10°C-, scandal and corruption.

Although there is sometimes a sour smile, the film becomes more and more depressing towards the end, resulting in a strong ending.

3.5*

Same location filmed in 1978 and in 1982.

Our protagonist is on his way to his new job on a state farm when he takes shelter from the storm on a small farm where the farmer lives with his much younger wife.

In 1982 he returns with a whole police force, just as the state of siege has been declared in Poland.

Since all those Poles are already coming to the Netherlands, maybe they can help a little in our film industry!! How true, they are true masters of cinema there.

This fairly recent film also deserves a very nice score.

Reminds me a bit of the Romanian classmate "Police, Adjective" and some "Rashomon" echoes through it as well.

Dark film about a police investigation on a remote farm, where three bodies are found in the early 1980s. The leading role seems to be reserved for the excessive consumption of vodka. I also like a drink every now and then, but this distasteful behavior really disappoints me. So much so that in retrospect I think it's a worthless movie. The later films by director Wojciech Smarzowski appeal to me more.
