As an infant, Kukorica is abandoned in a cornfield. He is found by a farmer and taken in. At a young age he works for the farming family as a shepherd. When he reaches adolescence, he falls in love with the orphan girl Iluska, whom he hopes to marry. But she lives under the yoke of her evil stepmother. When Iluska and Kukorica meet secretly one day, some sheep escape. He is chased out of the village by his master.
