Well, the poster is definitely stronger than the film. The poster and the title of Death Ship made me think of the later Ghost Ship, but that comparison turns out to be completely irrelevant, and the latter is so much better, but that's beside the point. Death Ship is disappointing, lacking in atmosphere and hardly exciting. It builds slowly, making the running time feel much longer. The abandoned ship looks interesting, and that's at least a good setting; the downside is that it's also the highlight of the entire film.

Dead end on this Death Ship. Even considering that this is an 80s film, and therefore somewhat clunky in terms of effects (the ship's demise at the beginning is abysmally poorly shot), it's subpar. There's simply little tension, it's predictable, and it's pretty easy to guess beforehand who will survive this adventure and who will perish. Only the shower scene is delightfully inventive; those recurring close-ups of the supposedly menacing ship even become irritating time-wasters. Only suitable for fans of older films that look a bit campy, films from a time when it was clearly not allowed to cost too much.

No eighties video store is complete without Death Ship on its horror shelves. Oddly enough, I never picked this one up, despite that awesome ship on the poster/cover. Why not? Because there was always one other, even more interesting title. What do you expect? A kind of haunted house, but on a boat. And that's pretty much it, but especially in the second half, this Death Ship becomes a pretty decent horror film.
