Film version of Bizet's famous opera based on a completely new libretto by Oscar Hammerstein. The story has been moved to an American army base during World War II and to Chicago. Not as good as I thought I remembered from my first viewing about half a century ago. I was a fan of Harry Belafonte at the time, but his performance in this movie is now very disappointing to me. I can't say that about the seductive Dorothy Dandrige, who is the radiant center and effortlessly pulls into every scene in which she appears. Nevertheless, you are left with a somewhat unsatisfied feeling.

Based on Bizet's opera, in turn based on a novella by Prosper Mérimée, Preminger made this film in which there were no whites in the cast and in which, as he himself would have claimed, he had no intention of making a musical film , but first and foremost a drama in which there is also singing.

The result mainly stars an impressive Dorothy Dandridge, but Preminger was unable to make his film very compelling.

Harry Belafonte, quite popular at the time, overacted a few times in playing and singing.

Was expecting something more convincing.

It is still somewhat of a gimmick to write a modernized (noir) story with new lyrics to old and in the double meaning of the word classical music, and to have it performed by an entirely African-American cast. . However, the presence of the three protagonists (the electrifying Dorothy Dandridge, the attractive Harry Belafonte and the exuberant Pearl Bailey), the beautiful color photography and the brisk pace make this a fairly entertaining production, and I certainly didn't get bored anywhere. Too bad about the dubbing of those voices, it would have contributed something to the reality if Dandrige and Belafonte had been allowed to record their own songs (even though those parts would have had to be simplified a bit).
