Nice.

I don't know the manga/anime, but that's not a problem at all with these kinds of films. A nice budget and too much running time always ensure that the core of the story can be filmed quietly.

Gantz has become an amusing film. The idea is nice, it's all still a bit episodic (each episode or story arc a new monster of course) but the film manages to entertain without coming across as too moronic. Given the story, that was one of the biggest pitfalls I think.

The biggest plus are certainly the fun enemies of the Gantz soldiers. The mutual vicissitudes are much less exciting and take the pace out of the film, although the fans will find that the characters "get more depth". The film is therefore a bit too long in the end, but that is also nothing new in this kind of Japanese film.

Fortunately, the other sequences make up for it, especially the mechanical puppet was great fun. You only find that kind of weirdness in Japanese films.

Better attempt than 20th Century Boys, still a similar project, where there is quite a bit of blood flying around, there are nice bad guys and where a reasonable story is set up from an entertaining premise.

Give the second part a chance soon.

3.5*

DVD easy to find in France (Wild Side Video), where manga has penetrated much deeper than in the Netherlands. Gantz is the film adaptation of a manga comic series, although cutbacks were made in terms of gore scenes. However, they clearly had a large budget for it, which was spent in the action scenes. Especially the last enemy

But otherwise the story has little to do and it is essentially no more than a surrealistic superhero film with Matrix-like allures. Because it is based on manga, it means that three chapters are squeezed into one movie. Because the idea would much better give rise to a series in which the heroes each time fight a different alien. As a result, the film is repetitive. Furthermore, it also collapses in the quiet moments, with romantic interludes and existentialist nonsense.

Still, Gantz deserves a 3* thanks to the first strong half hour and the intense action. It has not become a bad film adaptation and is not difficult to watch.

Semi-successful Japanese action film. I saw the 2016 animated remake once and loved it. That's why I thought that a film like this could also be easy for me. However, the opposite was proven. There is nothing wrong with the bombastic action. Bloody where it should be bloody and spectacular enough to keep you interested. I must say that the enemies lack some creativity, especially those mutants are not creative enough for a movie like this. The colossal Buddha towards the final phase was successful. What I especially miss is some tempo, because the parts between the action mainly take a long time and turn out boring. No one really plays an interesting character, despite the enthusiastic acting. So until they had processed their own problems, as a viewer I was mainly waiting for things to explode again. Because those parts are especially long, the film quickly fell short. Of course I can well understand that they are there, they are just elaborated in anything but interesting. Always a shame with these kinds of potential films.
