The Forgotten Space plot
In the cinematic essay "The Forgotten Space", Allan Sekula and Noël Burch explore the sea; the 'forgotten space' of our modern age, where globalization and the current financial crisis become visible in the most pressing way'. Globalization has made labour, money flows and means of production mobile. More than 90% of freight transport worldwide goes by sea. "The Forgotten Space" follows this globalized container transport. The film examines the ports of Rotterdam and the effects of the Betuwe route, visits the abandoned village of Doel near Antwerp that is being sacrificed to the expansion of the port. We see how the economic crisis deepens around the ports of Los Angeles and what is changing in Hong Kong where the industry has moved to the new economic zones of Southern China like Shenzhen. And what happened to the old Spanish port city of Bilbao?
