"The simple life... is rarely simple."

Virginia (Jennifer Connelly) is a charming but mentally ill woman who finds her great love and protector in her illegitimate son Emmet. But her longest-lasting love is for married, local, Mormon sheriff Dick Tipton (Ed Harris). He could be Emmet's father. This secret threatens to come out when Virginia's son starts a relationship with Tipton's daughter. The question now is whether a mentally unstable woman can fulfill the role of mother.
