Crime, prostitution, adultery, a whining mother, murder, rape and Alain Delon trying to keep his family together. Everything you hope and expect in a classic Italian film comes to life in this metropolitan sequel to 'La Terra Trema'. Luchino Visconti was occasionally forced by the censor to use an extra dark filter for overly explicit scenes, but that does benefit the drama. Despite the not too cheerful stories, Milan unfolds like a beautiful backdrop, in which it is also pleasant to watch Annie Girardot and Claudia Cardinale.

Wonderful film by Luchino Visconti with a wonderful cast. Alain Delon, Renato Salvatori and Annie Girardot play brilliantly. The typical Sicilian atmosphere is to write home about. The film follows a poor family who move from the south of Italy to Milan in order to increase their employment opportunities. The eldest son Vincenzo happens to have lived there for a long time and hope that he can be of service to his family.

The four boys love boxing and would like to turn it into professional boxers. This only works with Simone (but later also with Rocco, Alain Delon). Simone falls in love with a prostitute (Nadia), but in reality falls for Rocco. Simone spontaneously starts to get jealous and this also leads to fierce quarrels between the two brothers. The scene where Nadia and Rocco are caught is pretty intense to watch, but also beautifully played.

All in all, an atmospheric film that is worthy of a viewing!

Beautiful movie. First of all, the full three hours are captivating. The pace is lovely and the characters are interesting. In my opinion, the film could have been even bareer, less cinematic drama and, above all, an atmospheric sketch and portrait of such a family. Because that's what it's all about for me. I didn't even think it was a portrait of people who come from conservative southern Italy, because that just depends on what it is.

But the choices that are then made, I can either live with that or I think they are great. Nice to see the two main characters Simone and Rocco put together who also go through a kind of reverse development, something that is also done so beautifully in the classic Anna Karenina. The acting also helps. Alain Delon beautifully subdued and that brother is mainly an irritating role, but played with feeling so I didn't find him annoying. The supporting roles are sometimes a bit overdramatic, but because they are only supporting roles and Rocco's main role is so quiet, it works fine; I didn't mind it.

Visually also great at times, with those framing. Just on the Milan Cathedral alone how people look down through the openings. Splendid to see. Then the characters may be turned on a bit too symbolically and sometimes I really don't understand them (how Rocco continues to defend his brother and not his raped girlfriend) -partly I accept that because of the zeitgeist and partly it doesn't work very well - but it doesn't affect the score much. Rounded up 4.5*.
