“Beyond the Steppes” tells of a woman's forced journey to the steppes of Central Asia. 1940. Nina, a young Polish woman, is deported to the Soviet Union with her baby by the Soviet army. A Belgian production that I had never heard of. It may have to do with the fact that the film mainly looks Polish in terms of (initial) location and context. The director is also completely unknown to me. Not bad in terms of content, but it didn't immediately grab me by the throat. Rather drawn out and filmed distantly. Indeed sober and with long shots.

I missed some emotions and intensity, but especially (physically) battered characters after all that labor in the camp. Not bad, but expectations were already higher.
