Konferenz der Tiere plot

The animals in the African savannah have been wondering for a while where the water has gone. It should have come long ago through a gorge from the distant mountains. The thirst is growing, so are the worries, given that the last pool of water is defended by fierce buffalo and angry rhinoceroses. The brave little meerkat Billy and the peace-loving lion Socrates set out in search of water. In the process, they also meet the Gallic rooster Charles, who led a polar bear, a kangaroo, a Tasmanian Devil and two Galapagos tortoises to Africa.

Toddler plagiarism.

This borrowed animation work quickly makes your toes curl. Not with the very youngest, but with the average adult who has already seen everything pass by in the years before. Often better animated, but above all in an original jacket. When the conference finally takes place, many viewers will have dropped out of this apparently intended for toddlers and preschoolers.

Moderate.

To make you itch.

It's all so predictable and milked out that it's almost no longer fun to watch. If you're younger than 8, this is probably a lot of fun, but after that it'll be hard to keep your attention. The humor is disappointing, not fun for adults and not really successful even for the little viewers. At one point you'd like to wring the meerkat's neck, and the other animals don't steal your heart either. No one really stands out, it's flat and meaningless.

Too bad. I was looking forward to a nice animated film, I was hoping for a bit of Madagascar style but alas...

A persistent drought in the savannah prompts a group of animals led by the wise lion Socrates [Stephen Fry] to venture into the 'Valley of Death' to find out what has happened. Among them are the resourceful meerkat Billy [James Corden] and his lover Bonnie [Billie Piper], the self-assured rooster Charles [Andy Serkis], elephant Bonnie [Dawn French], giraffe Giselle [Joanna Lumley] and the ancient tortoises Winston [Jim Broadbent] and Winifred [Vanessa Redgrave]. Of course, they discover that the drought was caused by humans, for whom economic interests weigh more heavily than the climate. The makers have clearly spent a lot of time on realistic vistas and detailed skins and feathers. That time could have been better spent on the script, which, although well-intentioned, is very preachy, the humour is often tasteless and the tone is occasionally gloomy. But above all, it is slow and boring.
