The Battle for Johannesburg plot
In 2006, with the World Cup in prospect, the city council of Johannesburg will start a major refurbishment of the impoverished neighborhoods in the center. Filmmaker Rehad Desai follows this metropolitan makeover from the beginning. At first, Desai is just as enthusiastic as the city council and the young real estate entrepreneurs, but as the process progresses, he increasingly questions the intentions of those involved and the final result. Thanks to or despite the work of well-meaning administrators and entrepreneurs, organized crime sees its chance to mainly fill its own pockets under the guise of supporting the poorest of the poor. As the project nears completion, Desai takes stock: who are the winners here and who are the losers?
