Into Eternity: A Film for the Future plot
Every day, power stations around the world produce tons of highly radioactive nuclear waste that nobody really knows what to do with it. The barrels of waste are stacked in temporary storage facilities that are invulnerable to natural disasters, wars and other human interventions. In Finland, scientists are working hard to develop a permanent repository in which some 300,000 tons of nuclear waste can be safely stored for at least 100,000 years, as long as there remains a radiation risk. The structure is a tunnel system hewn from stone that can be closed, never to be opened again. The scientists must take into account climate change, natural disasters, human forgetfulness and, above all, the most unpredictable: human curiosity. How do they prevent later civilizations, like us, from trying to open this mysterious edifice?
