Odette plot

"The Dramatic Story of a Woman's Courage!"

Odette was born in France and was married to an Englishman who died in battle during World War II. When the British Army called for photos of the French coast, they sent a lot of holiday snaps to the War Office. As a result, Odette was approached to serve as a British agent in France during the German occupation. Led by Captain Peter Churchill and Private Arnaud of the French Resistance, Odette was able to behave like a typical French citizen, which was put to excellent use by the Allied intelligence services.

The film brings little concrete information about the French/British resistance movement in France during World War II.

In the first part there is only some errands and we don't even see a German soldier.

A disappointment actually and yet the reflection that there was much more to do with this subject.

The end of the film is rather chaotic and way too artificially constructed.

The translations, on the other hand, are good.

In terms of style, it is clearly a precursor to the adventurous war and espionage films of the 1960s, complete with exotic locations. In that respect, this was one of the few black-and-white films that would have benefited from a little more color on the cheeks.

Funny to see Ustinov as a Frenchman, by the way, he does that quite nicely despite the fact that he sometimes confuses the accent with the well-known Russian accent. Trevor Howard once again plays the archetypal stiff upper lip Brit.

Beautiful and sober representation of a true story about an undercover agent during the Second World War, in which the leading role is not reserved for a classic silent hero, but for a woman who does not know whether she is the right person in the right place , but when it comes down to it, it turns out to be made of the right stuff, and that is necessary. The first half is still quite calm, with most of the danger off-screen when the resistance fighters warn each other about raids or unsafe places, but once Odette is arrested the film steps up the intensity a few notches, and although we only hearing the torture methods is enough. Anna Neagle's performance helps enormously, because in prison there is little left of the beautiful and quite glamorous woman from the beginning, and the last scene (in which she is certainly not at her best) is moving - I myself was in at least to my own surprise, literally with tears in my eyes, which I take as a compliment for her beautiful playing. Great roles for Marius Goring as the unwilling collaborator ("I hate war. It interrupts my music") and Guyri Wagner as the ominous interrogator.
