Unlike many other dance movies, this one worked for me. Maybe it's because it's a British movie and not an American one. For some reason, I found the characters a lot more sympathetic than in, say, the Step Up series.

I found Nichola Burley a big plus. A very beautiful and fresh appearance that pulls the whole film towards her. In addition, I found the dancing quite ok and I was also pleasantly surprised by the supporting role of Rampling.

Furthermore, the scenario was of course not brilliant and you have seen it all before, but because of the sympathetic character and the beautiful Burley I still enjoyed watching this film.

Good.

This is a film that makes me happy every time. A dance film that makes you dance yourself and hopes that you can get better and better so that you can do what they do in the film.

Of course, this is inspired by the successful Step Up franchise, but with a rock-solid, quintessentially British soundtrack and a finale that (thanks to choreographer Will Tuckett) sublimely blends street dance with classical ballet, this can stand on its own two feet. Giwa and Basquin also go 'back to basics' with this story of a dance crew that is abandoned by crew leader Jay [Ukweli Roach] a few weeks before the UK Championship (and qualification for the World Cup). Carly [Nichola Hurley] takes over, but due to a combination of inexperience and sheer bad luck, everything seems to go wrong and friction arises within the crew. Carly is thrown a lifeline when dance school owner Helena Fitzgerald [Charlotte Rampling] makes her an offer: the crew can use the school's facilities free of charge if she adds Helena's ballerinas (who need an external boost to have any chance of joining the Royal Ballet) to the crew. Dramatic depth is not what you get with these teen-oriented dance films, but the culture clash provides some fun moments and the lack of glitz and spectacle means we get to see street dance as it was: on the streets, sometimes in the rain, in parking garages or on wooden dance floors. Next up: StreetDance 2.
