Awesome!

The soundtrack especially. Nicely grimy and distorted. The scream that is processed in the music at a certain moment was just sick. Nothing but praise for the audio part. Visually this film is also something to behold. Very dark and often filmed hand-held, but beautifully and efficiently captured.

Not a typical horror film. The first hour remains reasonably within the boundaries of the genre, but then a 180° turn is made and the film suddenly tends towards a kind of Belgian La Haine. An abrupt switch that could have been a bit more subtle, but both parts are no less than each other. The result is that the drooling horror fan may be left hungry and will not be really happy with this choice.

Acting also strong (Nahon shows up again), concept certainly captivating. A bear of a film, which fortunately continues the current trend of grimy Belgian films (also comes at a good time, so soon after Rundskop). Immediately also one of the better ones of its kind.

A solid 4.5* and an extensive review

A bit of a disappointment.

And that's a shame, because I actually hold Belgian cinema in high regard. This time, the result left me rather cold, unfortunately.

It's a shame that the moments the film should score on don't have a bit more bite. The ''horror moments'' that the film is rich in pale in terms of impact compared to similar scenes in, for example, Trouble Every Day. It's also striking how many other films I recognized in this film. Trouble Every Day, but also Jenifer and La Haine regularly came to mind. Unfortunately, Cannibal can't compete with the level of the films mentioned.

For the rest it all feels a bit like loose sand, and the film just meanders along, without really reaching highlights or offering interesting scenes. The soundtrack was okay, visually certain black and white scenes stand out, although all in all it wasn't enough to really glue me to the screen. The acting didn't make me fall off my chair either, with the exception of Nahon. Too bad the man doesn't get many big(ger) roles, it was nice to see his grumpy face again.

Expected quite a bit, but unfortunately there is no taste or crackle. Misses especially the power that many of those recent Belgian films do have. Understand very little of all the hosanna reviews. 2.0* for the nice visuals and soundtrack.

An intriguing mystery horror film that unfortunately goes off the rails in the final 40 minutes. Cannibal feels like a production where director Benjamin Viré hoped to experiment with two different films. This would certainly explain why the film's stylistic and musical compositions completely shift after just over the halfway point. Fortunately, the acting is consistently solid, and the first hour is captivating thanks to the subtle and intriguing chemistry. Visually, the film impresses with its music and imagery, even though the practical effects are poor and quickly obscured by wildly shaking cameras. The second half loses its appeal entirely due to its uneven and confusing progression.
