Abalone (jeonbok) and sea women (haenyeo). I'm up for Japanese island films, but I don't think I'd seen any Korean ones yet. It's somewhere between Shokei no Shima (1966) and Kyôfu Kikei Ningen: Edogawa Ranpo Zenshû (1969). Then you might also get something like Kamigami no Fukaki Yokubo (1968), but surprisingly enough, I still haven't seen that one. It's a bit typical that those Japanese films are all about ten years older, but if you look hard enough, you can find plenty of gems in South Korean cinema as well.

The film employs a multi-point-of-view flashback narrative structure, frequently shifts in tone, features a mishmash of genres, and boasts all sorts of stylish, colorful shots that can now be admired in all their glory with the Blu-ray release. The transgressive finale is to die for. This scene, of course, just couldn’t happen.

It's always a matter of caution on an island. Stubborn locals, old traditions that refuse to budge, mysterious rites, and before you know it, you'll end up on a funeral pyre.

Iodo, or Io Island, is a rather mysterious Korean film about the titular island. It's exceptionally atmospheric, has beautiful visuals, and features an intriguing story, as far as I could follow. But I'll be honest, even with some plot explanation afterward, I still missed a lot, and the film doesn't aim to deliver a clear-cut plot. It's about the mysterious and perhaps even mythical island of Io, near the island of Parang. Only women live on Parang, often widows of deceased fishermen, and there are many traditions, even shamans—modernity doesn't make much of an impact, and that seems no coincidence. The main storyline concerns the disappearance of a journalist and the search for him, and through it, we also see a lot about Parang, Io, and its inhabitants. The ending also features a violent example of penis abuse and necrophilia.

This wasn't easy to watch, though it certainly intrigued me. Plenty of beautiful visuals, excellent acting, and I was rarely bored. However, the film did leave you wondering where we are in the chronology, and sometimes even who we're watching at all—there's a constant jump between multiple time periods and locations, and the atmosphere is generally quite dreamy, with a vague divide between reality and myth. But I thoroughly enjoyed it; it's quite obscure, but a gem in my opinion.
