The free-spirited prostitute Ilia is very popular in the Greek port city of Piraeus. When the American Homer arrives in this town to investigate how Greek antiquity has fallen into disrepair, he becomes fascinated by Ilia. In her he sees an example of this decline and according to the Pygmalion tradition he is determined to retrain her to become an erudite and eloquent woman.
