Why so unnecessarily long?

The day of the triffids. The cover itself already looked very B, but I took it from the Boekelier for a few euros anyway. Why not? B movies can be good too...why not this one?

First of all.. so... incredibly... slow... There are many unnecessary parts that wouldn't have had to be put in for the world's money, so the film just stretches unnecessarily and you get a 3-hour miniseries. I think not only me but a lot of others would have really appreciated it if they just made this a normal hour and a half movie.

Too much is shown that doesn't belong. This film is about plants that after a while make sure that humanity is on the edge. Why do I have to spend 2 hours watching which team Jo and Bill choose? Why do I need to see which one is better? Why? That just doesn't interest me.

Sure, I would have liked to know where they end up and why etc.. but I really don't need to see that much of it.. It started to look a bit like a drama and I soon forgot the core of the film. So, yes.. an hour and a half = fine.

In principle, acting performances are not bad, although I did have a few flaws, but oh well, that has (almost every film).

I was very doubtful whether this movie should get a place in my closet or whether I should get rid of it, but after writing this message I decided to get rid of it anyway. When am I going to watch a 3-hour movie that you don't like for 1.5 hours? Right, never.

3* (purely for the 1.5 film which is good)

Watched for the second time. My interest was originally sparked by a friend's rave about the book.

This remains a nice miniseries, which is not sufficiently oppressive to hold the attention for a long time, which is why I certainly did not want to finish it in 1 go. Nevertheless, there is plenty to enjoy: typically British and what you can expect from a BBC production: excellent (especially practical) effects, beautiful landscapes (the most beautiful is London, which first seems deserted and later turns out to be a smoking mess when the Triffids put their hit).

Somewhat elongated, for example in the beginning we see Eddie Izzard walking around aimlessly without knowing what he is up to now. Actors are fine by the way and don't be afraid of Jason Priestley, he's not nearly as annoying as when he started in Beverly Hills 90210.

A very modest climax that disappoints a bit. I had expected that with the help of pesticides and planes, or a lot of fire, the Triffids would be defeated, but actually they just flee to an island.

I haven't read the book. The short content of the miniseries seemed worthwhile to me.

I watched the two episodes back-to-back (because they were televised that way), but I was glad this tedious story was over. This could have been perfectly incorporated into a 90-minute television film. And if they had done the latter, they could have used "the budget of those other 90 minutes" to make good special effects, among other things. And then maybe there was enough tension in it to really put this movie in the "thriller" category.
