Nel Nome del Padre plot

Angelo is sent by his father to a strict Catholic boarding school for difficult to educate rich boys. The school is run by a group of priests, most of whom are incompetent or sadistic. Or both... Angelo makes a huge mess in the boarding school: he shouts Hitler-esque slogans, bullies everyone and he ensures that a student is expelled from school. Angelo makes great use of fear mongering, which gives him power among his schoolmates. Only Father Corazzo manages to stand up to the boy, when he realizes that repression is not the best answer...

One of the least watched and lowest rated films from Homescreen's Italian Masterpieces series, it had been sitting unseen on the shelf for a while for that very reason, but never worry too much about what others think, because it turns out to be rightly included in this generally strong series.
The influence of Passolini is clear, but even more so an Italian variation on If... and a considerable provocation towards the Catholic Church.
Masturbation scene with a coming-to-life statue of the Virgin Mary, lugging around the corpse of a dead priest, rape of a nun, but above all rebellion against the outdated system of Catholicism in the 1950s.
It might not be to everyone’s taste, but fans can definitely check this film out.

A fascinating film with a rawness that seems typical of Italian cinema of that period, I see it in Scola, Passolini. A picture of the times. The Church's worldview is changing, (war) Pope Pius XII is dead, long live John XXIII. Impressive scenes, photographically very beautifully done. What a contrast: the rebellion of the kitchen workers - whom you would like to support in all their poor demands, but: incited by arrogant rich people in their desire for pre-war power (relations).

Current.

That too.
