Family honor, soldier's honor. These are difficult concepts to grasp, with which I have little connection. Together with a spark of romance, they form the themes of this film set against the backdrop of Kitchener's colonial war in Sudan. Despite the occasional beautiful outdoor shots, it all struck me as too contrived. Mediocre.

AEW Mason's eponymous novel was also adapted for the screen in 1915, 1929, 1955 (also by Zoltan Korda, as Storm over the Nile), 1978, and 2002, but *this* 1939 version is considered the best, and I can hardly argue against that, except for the fact that I saw the 2002 version first, giving it a slight edge in my book. The pacing is excellent from start to finish; John Clements pulls off a fine worried look; partly due to the skillful location work, the film exudes a good, realistic atmosphere; there is a commendable, restrained use of music; and the colors are beautiful, although on my 2003 Carlton DVD they come across as somewhat less impressive than they must have been on the big screen back then (partly because they seem to "leak" here and there). The only thing I occasionally struggle with is Ralph Richardson's slight overacting, first when he stumbles down the mountain in the sun and then when he runs around half (or completely) insane after the battle, but his final scene when he realizes the truth makes up for a lot. (Moreover, in his defense, it must be said that those scenes in the desert are also difficult to play, and furthermore, as Graham Greene says about "hamming it up," "even the richest of the ham goes smoothly down.") So all in all, a highly satisfying adaptation of a classic adventure novel.
