The Dying of the Light plot
"For 120 years they brought the light to our screens. Now their light is dying."
Documentary about the invisible hand that brings the light into the cinema: the film operator. For a moment, their cabin itself is the centerpiece of this film that looks back on a time when you could still touch film images. The cinematographer is the last link in the filmmaking process - the lightmaker who was also busy in the cabin with such mundane things as masking tape and a toothbrush to clean the running gear. Many projectionists were covert collectors; the film belonged to the projectionist for a moment, until he passed it on to us. The operator profession, which has remained virtually unchanged for a century, has virtually ceased to exist since the digitization of recent years.
