Loach is a master at making films about people who try to make something out of it against the tide and ultimately fail or only partially succeed. This film about the seamy side of Glasgow also fits in that list. As a counterpart to the gloomy atmosphere, in my opinion, the relationship between Liam and Suzanne (his sister's girlfriend) could have been worked out a bit more.

Ken Loach may be known for his affinity with the (a)socially lower working class neighborhoods in England, yet he succeeds time and again in bringing their little simple hearts to life. And that's the power of his films for me. Sweet Sixteen is no exception. You simply have no choice but to empathize very intensely with the characters. respect!
