Joe Trent (Van Heflin) is a rugged mercenary who fights with the Philippine partisans against Japan during World War II. David McVey (James MacArthur) is the spoiled, aimless son of a wealthy businessman who jokingly joins the Philippine partisans. Joe takes David under his wing and makes him tougher and mature. David is also attracted to the local girl Sisa (Rita Moreno).
