The Kids Grow Up plot

"Letting go is hard to do"

In '51 Birch Street', director Doug Block discovered that he hardly knew his parents. In 'The Kids Grow Up' this past returns, only now Block's own fatherhood is central. There was always a distance between him and his father, for his own daughter Lucy he is above all a buddy, as is apparent from the piles of film material from her. Now that she is about to go to college, he is very much looking forward to the approaching empty nest. He films her last year at home and in the meantime investigates what modern parenthood entails. Block is extremely outspoken, as are his family members. Even when his wife falls prey to severe depression, or when his daughter cries furiously that she's tired of that movie, they keep talking to him and his camera. Special, intimate study of the wonderful relationship between parent and child.
