The Resident plot
"She Thought She Was Living Alone"
dr. Juliet Dermer (Hilary Swank) moves into a new rental apartment in Brooklyn. However, she soon feels that she is being watched closely by her landlord, Max (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). When it becomes clear that Max has a creepy obsession for Juliet, a dangerous game of cat and mouse begins.

Still a nice film that keeps the attention a bit, but as predictable as the consumption is after the first 5 minutes and you immediately know who the bad guy is. Hillary Swank does a good job in this film as the tenant of Max's apartment. And we soon notice that something is not quite right with him. This time we are not dealing with a Jigsaw type psycho but just with a pretty pathetic sex frustrated dirty man, who sees Juliet as fresh meat, whom he secretly watches every now and then, jerks himself off and can't have it at all when she hangs out with other men. Really.... I have rarely seen such a pathetic perverse character as a character in a movie, damn it, really the lowest of the low. So in that regard, the film succeeded in terms of conviction. As an actor you would be ashamed to play such a figure. Remarkably enough, the film also has a minimal Paranormal Activity moment and towards the end we face the good old cat and mouse game between psycho and woman.
So still entertaining.

Very simple movie. The synopsis immediately tells you what you get to see more or less throughout the film. And you can predict everything that is not in the synopsis.
It's a fun movie for when you're bored, that's why I give the movie a 2.5*. I must admit that I did enjoy myself. But it's certainly not top notch.

This wasn't too good. A woman moves into a new apartment and from that moment on is terrorized by the owner of the apartment complex. In the beginning he is still friendly and charming but his behavior becomes more and more strange.
The story has no surprises and there is no suspense. It is clear from the start who is spying on her all the time and every thriller cliché is ticked off. Swank is good and still knows what to make of her character. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is strong as a charming and friendly Max, but when he has to play the psychopath things go wrong. Physically he is still an opponent for Juliet, but he doesn't really threaten him. Christopher Lee is scandalously little used and can do little else with this material than looking menacing and "creepy". The Resident is a waste of so much talent and ultimately an uninspired failure.
