Nice.

A small, babbling drama. The Japanese countryside is of course very suitable for this, the pace is a bit slower there anyway and it doesn't look very modern either. It is the ideal setting to unfold this story, which Nishikawa does very skillfully.

The story itself is quite nice, especially because a rather shady venture is still told with a lot of warmth and affection. Shôfukutei is also the perfect actor for that, he plays his role with verve. The rest of the cast is certainly not much inferior, although most actors are simply typecast.

The film is not very exciting or striking. Kind of strange to read that he once emerged as the best in the KJ list, on the other hand that is a magazine that is typically sensitive to some more well-behaved drama work. The film could have been a little shorter and could have contained a little more scenes that really impress, but fans of the genre have a nice film to add.

3.5

Nice film about a country doctor who hides a secret. As a spectator you quickly realize what that is, but that makes it a bit exciting. Beautiful performances by Tsurube Shōfukutei and veteran Kaoru Yachigusa. Airy and pleasant. Without the plot twist, it could have been a Japanese version of "Village on the River" by Antoon Coolen.
