Snarveien plot

Lina and Martin are on their way from Sweden to Norway, because they could get cheap drinks in Sweden. Because of this, they have no choice but to go through the woods. When their tire bursts, they decide to seek help at the gas station. Shortly afterwards they find a screaming girl, whereupon the two call the police. This brings the girl, who is now unconscious, together with Lina and Martin back to a secluded house in the woods. The two do not realize that they are constantly being filmed, and that they are the protagonists of a film that is directly on the internet...

I hadn't expected much from this. It's not all that surprising either. From the moment the couple drives their car into the woods, you know trouble is coming. That police officer's appearance already struck me as rather suspicious, so I immediately thought: "it would be so easy if he were in on the plot." And then, of course, that's the case...

Well, aside from that, it was still a decent film. The introduction drags on a bit too long in my opinion, and when it gets really interesting, it ends rather quickly, unfortunately. Still, there was a sense of suspense throughout the film that kept me interested. And the main characters both surviving was also a nice touch.

2.5*

A decent piece with a good atmosphere and a great setting, but the buildup is too slow, making it a bit dull for a while. The execution could also have been much better; the gore itself was lacking.

The canopy of countless trees arches picturesquely over the road along which the young Norwegian couple travels from Sweden back to Norway. It's a peaceful scene that unfolds. A couple in love on their way back through the enchanting Swedish forests. It only lasts a moment. After all, Snarveien has a horror label, so the Swedish forests are less peaceful and enchanting than they seem. And yes, indeed. Before you know it, the protagonists find themselves in a treacherous scenario.

Director and writer Severin Eskeland creates an entertaining horror trip. He doesn't achieve this with tightly stylized and polished visuals. He does so with raw, unpolished images that make you feel like you're not in a polished horror production, but in a film that emphasizes reality. And therein lies the film's strength. The closer it approaches reality, the more enjoyable the film is. Much of the footage comes from cameras placed here and there along the wooded road. These images imply a raw reality and the presence of someone watching. An intriguing thought.

The eyes of the mounted cameras are the eyes of the young couple's observer. Who he is is only revealed towards the end of the film. Until then, all sorts of clues emerge, leading the viewer either right or wrong. Clues in the form of strange characters the young couple "accidentally" encounters. These encounters heighten the oppressive atmosphere that permeates the film almost from the beginning and is successfully intensified little by little. An unpleasant incident here. A brief encounter there. The tension is built perfectly.

There's no explicit horror. Drastic explosions of violence are consistently kept out of the camera's sight. I didn't miss the explicitness. Or rather, I didn't really notice it. Even without the plastic element, Snarveien is nasty enough. A fun film.
