Istanbul plot

Willy, a student, quits his summer job to go to Istanbul with the dark but fascinating Klamski. On the way from Ostend to Arlon, chance encounters form the pieces of a moral and psychological puzzle. Klamski turns out to be a tortured, violent pedophile seeking penance in a Turkish cell. Willy, however, with an unscrupulous innocence, reverses the balance of power and thus realizes his own dream of exotic Istanbul at the expense of Klamski.

Dominique Deruddere as an actor in a film by Marc Didden that is not very convincing.

I found the plot around the kidnapping rather imprecise (Arlon, Laroche, Seraing, Luxembourg....and then that woman who suddenly has the bright idea of "Willy" to correct "John's" mistake, the father's attitude...it's all very vague)

Average.

A clever road movie by Marc Didden in which an East German who has washed up in Ostend, Martin Klamski (Brad Dourif) and local Willy (Dominique Deruddere) leave for - assuming mythical proportions - Istanbul. The entire film is set in all parts of Belgium. We see pictures of Ostend, Ghent, Brussels, Seraing and the final destination Luxembourg. It is a drama, occasionally spiced with good humour that makes it easy to watch. Istanbul contains a daring sub-context. Klamski turns out after a while to be an internationally wanted murderer and paedophile. The highlight is the kidnapping of the young girl Corinne, which the duo carries out on behalf of her divorced father - whom they met by chance on their road trip - and which gives rise to tensions between Willy and Martin. The kidnapping also takes place in the heart of the Ardennes, which in retrospect rings a bell.

In terms of scenario, you can ask yourself some questions here and there about certain twists and coincidences, but on the whole they are not disturbing. Fascinating film from beginning to end as far as I am concerned. Deruddere and especially Dourif are in great form. For the music lovers there is also a cameo of the then still very young rock band The Scabs that would become world famous in the nineties (in Flanders).

The reactions are mostly positive, but I understand the average just as well. I was also left a bit hungry and was honestly disappointed in the plot progression. I found it all a bit too easy and simple, those contacts made.

First of all between Willy and the strange Martin himself. Why on earth does Willy link his fate to the mysterious unpredictable Martin. After a drunken night OK, but after a while you realize that you are really dealing with a weirdo. But also the other contacts are fleeting (literally even) and compliant like with that woman and a bit later with that father and the child. As if it is all so obvious. That drummer who appeared on screen at every opportunity was a funny idea.

I certainly did not get bored. You never do that with the idiosyncratic Marc Didden. Mediocre plot already, but entertaining enough to fill an hour and a half.
