Featuring excellent acting, the film subtly and nuancedly recounts small gestures, grand desires, and a whirlwind midlife romance in Berlin during a time of high unemployment. "You Are Not Alone" is a delightful summer tragicomedy of German making. Through the experiences of ordinary people, the film offers a beautiful, almost casual glimpse into German society in the mid-2000s.

The themes explored are heavy. Yet, issues like unemployment and alcoholism are treated with a certain lightheartedness. The summery atmosphere plays a role in this. Despite its lighthearted tone, "You Are Not Alone" is also a melancholic film. The characters long for closeness and communication and are afraid or unwilling to face reality. The film raises the question of whether you should remain listless in your current life or whether you should step out of your listlessness and find the energy to start something new once more.

The acting is excellent. In many scenes, there's little to no dialogue, and then it's down to gestures and facial expressions to convey the emotional context. This works very well. The dynamics are also excellent. The tragicomedy shifts smoothly between lighthearted and mournful. "It can't get any worse," is said at one point. An accurate yet bitter description of a low point, but it also implies that things can only get better after reaching that low point. A new beginning is always possible for everyone. Ultimately, that's the optimistic message the film conveys to the viewer. It may sound a bit saccharine, but the film's content is anything but.
