The Qing Dynasty, far into Chinese history. The Ming Dynasty has been overthrown and many people still believe that the Ming courts should be re-established as the sole rulers in China. But as with any rebellion, uprisings are suppressed and anyone who supports the Ming rebels is hanged. A village in the north that supports the Ming is attacked and destroyed, and the surviving daughter and wife of a rebel leader flee south to find protection from the Qing. A group of children, surviving another attack, decide to counterattack.
