Cidade de Deus: 10 Anos Depois plot

The documentary shows how the actors fared, ten years after the release of the film Cidade de Deus, which became a worldwide success. For the feature film, the actors were picked from the favelas in Rio. Many immediately spent the money they received (about a thousand euros on average) on jewelry, skateboards or groceries. Leandro Firmino, who played gang leader Dice in the film, bought a computer that broke down four years later. Finding new acting is difficult. Most actors from then have had other jobs, such as a car mechanic or piccolo in a hotel. One person has gone to jail. Seu Jorge, who played Mané Galinha in the film and was already a well-known samba musician in Brazil, stands out most notably by playing a role in director Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Sissou two years later.

Perhaps this documentary is a bit too literal.

10 years after the film, the makers go looking for the actors from Cidade de Deus... and that's exactly what you see. A rush through a whole can of actors who are allowed to briefly talk about what happened to their lives after the film.

Some have stuck in the acting world, others have not. And that was pretty much it. Little variation in their stories, little structure in the documentary, TV presentation and very cursory ... it is actually nothing more than filler material for a DVD, or rather a reissue on BluRay or something.

In any case, I found it extremely boring. Little content, a dry presentation of the subject without any added value. Only for die-hard fans of the film or lovers of programs like Show News.

0.5*

The title already makes it clear what the entire content of this documentary wants to pursue, and that is exactly what you get to see. Directing duo Cavi Borges and Luciano Vidigal track down various members of the 2002 crime classic and ask them what happened to their lives. For seventy minutes you are presented with a series of stories that may be interesting for the enthusiast, but are ultimately so unremarkable that as a whole it tends to lapse into dullness. Borges and Vidigal nevertheless do their best to speed up the pace by experimenting with the editing, but you can't make this kind of material much more interesting than it is. At a certain point I found the images of the slums significantly more interesting than the characters speaking and then you more or less know that you are not watching with much fascination. Extra points for the dedication to tracking down so many actors within this environment, but unfortunately it will not get higher than the current final score.
