"To survive inside, he has to become one of them."

Juan Oliver is an ambitious prison guard just starting out. On his first day he comes a little earlier, so that he can be worked in a bit. During the tour he is knocked out by an accident at a part where construction is underway. The others put him in a nearby vacant cell, No. 211, to patch him up. But then a major uprising and riot breaks out in the dangerous FIES section, and Juan is trapped in a cell and must try to save himself.

Semi-successful.

Impressive film from Spain, which also has a convincing REC to its name with its cinema. Cell 211 was a movie I actually went into blind. I didn't know what to expect except that he was Spanish and was about a prison riot.

Tosar plays a very strong role as Malamadre. Reminded me of Man Bites Dog, where Benoit Poelvoorde could completely change the atmosphere of the film in a blink of an eye. Tosar can often do this too, appearing as a cool leader on the one hand, he can suddenly spill over to an unpredictable guy.

Sometimes it's a bit cliche, because the blackmail from another trusted Malamadre friend was to be expected. But that doesn't make the film bad. The set is raw, but does not always come across as realistic and the film really could have been a lot harder, because the opening scene is an alarm signal, but the rest of the film remains fairly tame.

All in all, a pretty successful job.

Realistic and raw prison film that gets underway in peace. Nice atmosphere, nice menacing music. What also strikes me are the internal social problems within Spain, something that completely bypasses us here in the Netherlands, but within Spain the ETA is of course an issue. And Baksenland versus Spain too, just like the battle with Catalonia. In that sense, it's not just any stupid prison movie as far as I'm concerned. The film is convincing, the acting is good and perhaps certain events are a bit cliché such as the suspicions towards Juan, the blackmail and the problems and fatal outcome with his wife but yes, you know, then we can also stop with films because every road has been walked by now so everything is cliché. In that sense, the bad ending concludes a balanced, modest and entertaining film as far as I'm concerned.

Overall a very enjoyable, good movie.

A prison movie is always fun to watch. This Spanish version does have something if you don't focus too much on some things. Here and there too many coincidences and leading plot twists to steer the whole, but apart from all this, quite a pleasant film.

Good acting and excellent camera positions. The plot is captivating, but given that it seems that they are dealing with the real crap, it all remains rather well-behaved. No extreme or rock hard situations and images. The leader of the gang is very fickle and impressionable. It is therefore unlikely to get (and keep) a mob of prisoners on that basis.

The situation with Juan Oliver is kept tense although you know that this will come true. Nevertheless, a fine ending with a unforeseen ending. The rebellion may be broken, but there are no real heroes in the story. So no happy ending, but a plot like it could end in real life.

Not every subplot was worked out sufficiently. Many prisoners remain on the ground and much more could be done with the ETA members. The metamorphosis of Juan Oliver - which is not only due to the death of his wife - but also has to do with the inhumane living conditions, came just a little too easily or was worked out too little. Other than that, a great movie to watch.
