La Teta Asustada plot

Fausta (Magaly Solier) suffers from 'La Teta Asustada', a rare disease transmitted through the breast milk of women who were raped during a period of terror in Peru. The war may be over now, but Fausta is always reminded of it and lives her life in fear and without freedom. Her mother's sudden death forces her to face her fears and the secret hidden within her. She has in fact put a potato in her vagina which serves as a protective shield against disgusting invaders.

Phoe, what a special story. When you read the synopsis you have no idea what to expect. She put a potato in her vagina, should you laugh at that or be sad that the girl felt compelled to do this? Your first reaction when you read something like this is 'WTF?' but once you know the story around it, you won't be able to stop laughing. It's sad, and as a woman you try hard not to visualize it too much and imagine it. I don't want to think about all those risks. The infections, the potato can grow (the roots come out) and not to mention bleeding. The mere thought of it sends shivers down my body.

The story is dark, oppressive and yet quite simple. Fausta is difficult for the viewer to approach, you see her fear, but you can't do much with it. She didn't come to me, I didn't feel anything for her and I didn't get a 'bond' with her character. The other characters also remained flat.

The story is slow and lacks momentum. Anyway, it is not the type of film where one event has to happen after another. The singing parts also really took the pace out of the film, and there was already so little momentum in it.

As has been described before, it is mainly the ending that is worth mentioning, which slightly increases the film's rating. Finally what I was looking for with this film, unfortunately very late. Shame.

Interesting story, interesting culture, indigenous language, indigenous people, it sometimes resembles a documentary, but the director fails to make a good film with all those elements. The story alone should evoke emotions, but it is delivered very dryly, I was unable to sympathize with the characters. It's about people who are supposedly soulless because they were born from rape, and the film portrays them as such rather than as the stigmatized people they probably are in reality. A film that confirms such a stigma imposed by society instead of undermining it.

It's strange that it won the Golden Bear, perhaps because they wanted to opt for an indigenous-style film. Another nominee, About Elly (2009), could easily have beaten this one. Measly 2.5*.

I had some expectations for this Golden Bear winner, but was still somewhat disappointed afterwards. I didn't find it very compelling and wasn't drawn into the story enough. However, the starting point is strong with the stigma or taboo that applies to children born from rape. Interesting is the popular belief that these traumas are passed on to their daughters through their breast milk, although unlike the countryside, people in the city have different theories.

A rather charged story, dark and depressed. Also about fear that inhibits you as a person and how you should function. And yet I felt too little involved with the character. Although culture and folklore, I was not so enthusiastic about the musical intermezzos. Well, I thought there was more to it. Shame.
